A dermal filler before and after comparison depends on the day the after photo was taken. Hyaluronic acid filler adds volume instantly, but swelling can distort it for about a week with some lip fillers and up to four weeks with some cheek fillers. A touch-up check comes near day 30. After that, the result fades slowly.
Days 1 to 3: swelling makes the result look bigger
This is the stage people photograph most, and the least reliable one. According to the FDA, most side effects, "such as swelling and bruising, occur shortly after injection and many resolve in a few days to weeks."
Clinic blogs often claim lips look up to 30% bigger on day one. We couldn't trace that number to any study or label. There is no published figure for how much of day-one lip size is swelling.
One thing isn't normal at any stage. The FDA tells patients to seek immediate care for unusual pain, vision changes, skin near the injection turning white, gray or blue, or signs of a stroke during or shortly after treatment.
Weeks 1 to 4: each filler settles on its own schedule
Most guides give one settling window for every filler. The manufacturers' own labeling shows otherwise:
| Product and area | How long side effects lasted, per the manufacturer |
|---|---|
| Restylane Kysse, lips | "short lasting (7 days or less)" |
| Juvéderm Voluma XC, cheeks | "generally lasted 2 to 4 weeks" |
| Juvéderm collection overall | "most will resolve within 30 days" |
The labels don't explain the gap, so treat these as facts about each product instead of a rule about lips versus cheeks. Ask which gel your injector plans to use. Its window is a better guide to when the mirror turns honest than any generic two-week rule.
Around day 30, your injector decides on a touch-up
The one-month mark comes from how these fillers were tested. In Allergan's Juvéderm trials, a touch-up was allowed about 30 days after the first injection if correction fell short, and the company's longevity figures carry the qualifier "with optimal treatment."
That makes day 30 the fairest after photo you'll get. Swelling has cleared for most products, and any unevenness left is real. Take your own picture in the same light and angle as your before shot.
Sculptra's early fullness disappears before the real result arrives
Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid. It prompts your skin to build collagen rather than filling space directly. Its instructions warn that early plumpness comes from swelling and the water used to dilute it, which usually fades within hours to a few days and "you may look as you did before your treatment."
The real change builds over weeks. Your provider should see you about three weeks after each session. Galderma reports visible improvement as early as one month. In a US study, results for some patients lasted up to 25 months after the last session.
Months 6 to 24: the result fades and can still react
Your body absorbs hyaluronic acid filler over time. The FDA says longevity "depends on the filler material and the area where it is injected." Allergan puts Volbella XC and Ultra XC in the lips at up to one year, and Voluma XC in the cheeks at up to two.
A settled result can still flare. The FDA notes side effects "may appear weeks, months, or years after injection," including swelling or redness near the site after illnesses, vaccinations or dental work. Galderma says this inflammation typically responded to treatment or resolved on its own.
Ask any gallery which stage its after photo shows
Most galleries don't say how many days separate the two pictures. Juvéderm's official gallery names each patient's products and treatment areas but puts no date on the after image.
When you review an injector's photos, ask when the after shot was taken, which product went in, and whether a touch-up happened in between. Photos taken past that product's settling window, in matching light, are the ones that predict your own face.

FAQs
Can dermal fillers be reversed?
Hyaluronic acid fillers can be broken down with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which both Allergan and Galderma list as a treatment for persistent side effects. The FDA warns removal "may be difficult or impossible," especially for permanent fillers or ones not made of hyaluronic acid. Allergan adds that "the effectiveness of removal of any dermal filler has not been studied."
How long before a special event should I schedule my filler treatment?
Count back from your product's settling window, then leave room for the 30-day check. For a first treatment, book at least a month ahead.
How much pain should I expect during and after dermal filler injections?
Many hyaluronic acid fillers come premixed with lidocaine: Voluma XC contains "a small quantity of local anesthetic (lidocaine)," and Restylane Kysse contains 0.3%. Sculptra's instructions say a topical or local anesthetic may be applied instead. In its US study, 71% of patients reported some pain after the first injection and 14% had moderate pain.
Are dermal filler results permanent?
Most aren't. The FDA separates absorbable (temporary) fillers from non-absorbable (permanent) ones and approves the permanent kind only for nasolabial folds and cheek acne scars.
Do smoking and sun shorten how long filler lasts?
The labeling we reviewed doesn't put a number on it, and we found no published figure we could verify. Short term, Allergan tells patients to limit strenuous exercise, sun or heat and alcohol for 24 hours, since these can cause temporary redness, swelling or itching.
